"Dunst: I Would Have Been a Better Sylvia Plath" (fourth item)
Actress Kirsten Dunst regrets not grabbing the rights to make Sylvia Plath's biopic for herself, because she feels her portrayal of the poet would have been more convincing than Gwyneth Paltrow.'s The Spider-Man star admits she always wanted to play the suicidal writer on the big screen - and slams Oscar-winner Paltrow for failing to capture the essence of Plath in Sylvia. Speaking to American style magazine Nylon, she explains, "Even though I think Gwyneth Paltrow is an amazing actress, I think that Sylvia was a girl who wanted to hurt. She wanted to feel terrible. I felt like, in the movie, it was more like, 'I'm the victim!' It should have been more that she liked to create all this s**t in her head. She was crazier." Dunst is now hoping to play another real-life tragic figure - actress and activist Jean Seberg, who died from a drug overdose in Paris, France, in 1979. The girl gets a pixie cut, and she's suddenly Seberg? Oy. Dunst peaked for me circa "Drop Dead Gorgeous." She needs to shut it and work on her posture for a while.
[Also, Mark Rappaport, the guy who directed the Seberg doc she probably saw, is a pompous ass in person.] "Bonjour Tristesse" is one of the better Seberg flicks, but it isn't a patch on Sagan's novella, which is full of snarky and louche adolescent drama.
Posted by: cinetrix on March 6, 2004 09:25 AMyeah, Sylvia sucked, but there weren't any rights involved; the Plath estate wouldn't let them use more tnan "fair use" amounts of her actual writings.
It so sounds like what you'd expect a deeply superficial college chick to say, all hyped up on seriousness and desperate to purge her own meaninglessness.
