If you could attend one cultural event, highbrow or lowbrow, that's taking place this summer, what would it be?
Posted by nchicha at February 25, 2004 01:34 AMWell, Glastonbury Festival of course!
Posted by: Dan P on February 25, 2004 08:08 AMSummer? How about spring? Although it happens in my hometown, I've never done South by Southwest right. By which I mean, take off from work and parental duties, pay for full registration -- preferably for all three parts of the festival (interactive, film and music) -- and stay in a hotel downtown.
Ideally one would book a room a year or two in advance at the Austin Motel or San Jose on South Congress and cultivate a relationship -- flowers, candy, sexual favors -- with an Austin Chronicle insider who could help you prioritize the twenty-ring circus of simultaneous events.
And by the time the ten-day orgy of art and information was over, you'd want to meditate on a mountaintop for 11-1/2 months to cleanse the palate for the next one.
Posted by: Prentiss Riddle on February 25, 2004 09:13 AMSpring, not summer: My highbrow pick The Howard University symposium on Seth Benardete’s work, March 5-6, 2004. He was perhaps the best classical scholar of our age.
And lowbrow: The Adult Video News Awards 2004 in Vegas.
Posted by: Ron Mwangaguhunga on February 25, 2004 11:56 AMI'm frequently bummed living out in LA because all the great theatre is in NY. I'd love to see the production of Stoppard's Jumpers that's coming in from London but I doubt I'll make it.

I second Coachella. Except, I'm in Australia, and Coachella is sadly, not.

Meltdown, a film festival whose (I wish there were a "whichse" or a "thatse") artistic director is Morrissey. In London. In June.
