Planned, not yet abandoned:
-a response to William Boyd’s piece for the Guardian about the “renaissance” of the short story, compared to Lorrie Moore’s BASS 2004 introduction
-some thoughts about Toibin’s The Master, which I read over the weekend
Nearly abandoned:
-a discussion of reality TV and fake introspection
-a long response to The Reading Experience’s “merely literary” entry
-photos of tourism from my trip to Italy
-a critique of a certain computer program’s name
-a post about my blogging habits (where I store links, what I do with excess, how I organize my bookmarks, etc.), and a survey to learn more about others’ habits
-a post about the first Presidential debate
-a post about Wife Swap
-some thoughts about celebrity
Abandoned:
-some thoughts on Galleycat, and link-heavy blogging
-yet another post about The Swan
-a post about my father
-a post about a funeral
-a post about my landlady
-a thousand links, a thousand thoughts, for both this blog and another.
(Blogging, with its quick pace, its now-or-never energy, lets me see how easily I fall behind: how many posts I write but save as drafts for future edits, how many points I scrawl in notebooks and never transfer to my blog, how many links I bookmark without using.
Two aspects of my personality are at work here:
- a procastination similar to the consumer impulse, the thrill of purchase more important than the product’s use, and the thrill of finding links — how they suggest future writings — more accessible than my energy for writing.
- my sense of ownership of — or, at least, deep affiliation with — certain topics, so that if I don’t link to and write about the newest article on each, I feel like I’m betraying them and, more sanely (but only barely), myself.
The first impulse wastes time; the second, mourns it. And exhaustion keeps them cycling.)
It is dangerous to be sincere unless you are also stupid. George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950), Man and Superman (1903) “Maxims for Revolutionists”
