To say what should have been said a long time ago. Or yesterday.Most of the letters start out sappy; clichés, meant to express emotion, kill it. The language has no life. But then, half-way in, a surprising fact gets mentioned and unjams the on-switch: sentences, like wires, connect and buzz. A young man writes his crazy ex. He was unstable, she was more so: a bad, casual relationship. Then, this: “It’s been nearly 8 months since we gave our son, Luke, up for adoption.” And this: “When you told me that lightning struck your apartment and you lost everything. You know what I say to that? Good. ” Or, a letter reminisces on first love. I assume its writer is a teen; I remember how each event had drama then. As if life is a tub of water, and each event a drop of dye; in the beginning, the water’s clear enough that each drop affects its color. But the writer, still missing her boyfriend at 15, is 34 with children. And then there’s letters by girls wondering if they’re pregnant with their boyfriend or married lover’s baby; letters by young girls in love with an older man; letters by men whose girlfriends had abortions without asking them. The list goes on and on, and breaks my heart.
